Redland Home Assist Secure can help people with disabilities improve their safety and access at home.

  • Do you own or rent your home?
  • Do you need assistance with daily living activities?

You may be eligible for financial assistance for minor home modifications that improve your safety and access in and around your home. Extra funding is available but only until June 2015 so phone now: 3383 3030.

 

Help save the glossy black-cockatoo

Council is calling for volunteers to help with the annual survey of the glossy black-cockatoo on Sunday 3 May 2015.

Birkdale Landfill Rehabilitation works update

Works are progressing well with the recent purchase of high quality clay material to be used for soil capping prior to adding a grass cover. This treatment will improve water and storm water quality on the site.

Expect delays at the Birkdale Waste Transfer Station.
Trucks are now bringing in this clay, to be transported on week days up until the end of May (weather permitting).

To avoid delays during these works:

  • Minimise visits to Birkdale tip
  • Use the Redland Bay Waste Transfer Station at 761-789 German Church Rd
    (Redland Bay accepts all residential waste, however can only accept commercial greenwaste.)

Drive safely to help protect koalas

It’s koala breeding season until December. Adult koalas are on the move in search of a mate and last year’s young koalas are in search of a new home.

Drive carefully on our roads, especially between dusk and dawn, slow down to give yourself time to see wildlife on the roads. Please also restrain dogs at night to help koalas move around safely. If you see an injured koala, please phone 3833 4031.

School holiday activities

This winter school holidays Redland Libraries, Redlands IndigiScapes Centre and Redland Art Gallery have lots of activities to keep youngsters entertained! From spotlighting and earth exploring, to dinosaur days out, wearable art and drop-in art sessions, there’s a great range to suit kids of all ages.

NAIDOC Week Display

Request for war memorabilia

We will host an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Serving Country – Centenary and Beyond display during NAIDOC Week (7 – 12 July) at Cleveland Library. We are seeking local photographs, small artefacts and/or stories which relate to all wars in which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders serving Country.

Council is also seeking names of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander servicemen and servicewomen for a Redlands ‘Honour Roll’ poster. To contribute memorabilia or add a name to this display, contact Di Andews by email or phone 3829 8914.

 

Waste safety message

EPIRB disposal

Council cannot accept Emergency Positioning Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs) at Waste Transfer Stations or in kerbside waste bins. Incorrect disposal can cause serious safety issues or trigger false distress alarms wasting taxpayers’ money and valuable resources.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority advises unwanted or expired EPIRBs can be taken to any Battery World store for free disposal. The nearest store in Redlands is at Capalaba.

Tapas and music at RPAC

This Friday 20 June

Come along to the Piazza at Redland Performing Arts Centre (RPAC) from 5-7pm this Friday 20 June for a night of tapas and free live entertainment.

The night’s entertainment includes original music and covers of popular songs from Eva Cassidy, Sting, Sam Smith, Coldplay, Justic Crew, Sia, Sheppard and Michael Jackson performed by Noisy Minors and other artists from Vocal Manoeuvres.

‘Mother Earth Coming Together for All Children’ Exhibition

Visit Cleveland Library from Monday 10 – Friday 21 February 2014 to view a unique photographic exhibition and video presentation by local artist and Quandamooka Traditional Owner Craig Tapp.
This exhibition highlights a partnership project with cultural exchange ephemeral sand art by Craig and students from Cleveland District State High School and Carinity Education – Southside High School. An official opening will be held Monday 10 February at 11.30am. If you would like to

Bay’s Weinam Creek Priority Development Areas are available for public viewing and
written submissions until Monday 24 February. To view the plans or make a submission

Recycling near you

Public place recycling is here!

Did you know Council has installed 34 recycling wheelie bin enclosures in public places around
our city, with funding support from the National Packaging Covenant and Department of
Environment and Heritage Protection? This adds up to more than 461,000L of recyclables being
saved from landfill each year. Another six bins will be installed soon, bringing the total capture of
recyclables to 499,000L per annum. So when you’re out and about, look for the recycling signs around you and recycle what you would at home – aluminium, steel, paper and cardboard, glass and plastics with symbols numbering 1-6.

Paid traineeships available

Earn and learn with a 12-month Redland City Council traineeship, commencing this December. Business Administration, Horticulture and Water Operations traineeships are on offer across varying Council departments. Possible traffic delays – Sturgeon/Old Cleveland Rd East, Ormiston

Residents are advised there may be traffic delays while tree pruning works are undertaken on Sturgeon/Old Cleveland Road East, Ormiston, during the September/October school holidays. All efforts will be made to minimise disruptions to motorists, but for short periods of time both lanes may be closed to allow workers to safely trim vegetation. During peak hours 7am-9am and 3pm-5pm, works will be carried out off the road between the path and bollard line of Fellmonger Park to reduce traffic impacts. For more information, contact 3829 8641.

Garage Sale Trail

Saturday 26 October 2013
Now’s the time to sign-up for the Garage Sale Trail, happening on Saturday 26 October 2013 across the Redlands. Part of a national day of garage sales, it will be one big day of buying, selling, social networking and reducing landfill. Registration is free and open to everyone –
households, schools, community groups and businesses! Sellers who register by Saturday 5 October can also get a free information pack with fun apps to help you sell your items.

Unregistered vehicles

Safety issue on public roads
It is unsafe and illegal to drive and park unregistered vehicles on public roads on the mainland and islands. In response to community concern, Council is stepping up enforcement. Fines of $220 can be issued where unregistered vehicles are not removed from the road following a Council directive. Under Local Law (21) Council also has the power to seize these vehicles for public safety.
