Redland City shines as it grants Freedom of Entry to the City Air Force

Redland City celebrated its proud military history by granting Freedom of Entry to the City to the No. 95 Wing of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) today (Saturday 12 April).

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams granted entry to the City to the 150 RAAF personnel who marched up Middle Street, Cleveland cheered on by residents and visitors.

“This unique event not only celebrates Redland City’s proud military history, it has also provided an exciting event for locals and visitors,” Cr Williams said.

“The Redlands has been the scene of many key events in military history and with Anzac Day approaching today’s event is even more significant.

“There was a real sense of excitement generated from the parade today. I spoke with many at the event who have been part of Australia’s military past and the sense of pride was obvious.”

“And into the future, Redland City can look forward to a strong relationship with No. 95 Wing, the largest wing in the Air Force with more than 2600 personnel posted to every Air Force base in Australia.

Cr Williams said today’s event included a range of interesting activities for the community.

“The Protected Mobility Vehicle (an armoured military vehicle) was an obvious favourite with the excited kids, as were the RAAF trained dogs and the Air Force displays at the Cleveland Library Square,” she said.

“We also rolled out the Redlands red carpet for a host of VIPs, including Premier Campbell Newman’s wife Lisa Newman, who were welcomed at a special function at the Redlands RSL following the Freedom of Entry to the City parade.”

Division 6 Councillor Julie Talty, who has been a driving force behind the event, thanked the Air Force, particularly the No.95 Wing, for entering the Redlands in such spectacular ceremonial style.

“I’d also like to thank the Bayside Bulletin who partnered with Council in promoting the event and the rich history between the city and the Air Force, as well as thank Redlands RSL and the Rotary Club of Cleveland who helped to cater for today’s event in association with Redland City Council,” Cr Talty said.

“The Redlands is a fantastic place to live and visit and had a strong sense of community. It was great to be able to showcase the strengths of the city to the visiting RAAF, cadets and many people who came to see the event.”

A commemorative program featuring the proud history of the Redlands and the Air Force as well as today’s ceremony details was handed out at the parade and is available on Council’s website.

Air Force to be granted Freedom of Entry to Redland City

Get ready to cheer: 11am Saturday 12 April 2014

Redland City will bestow the age-old honour of Freedom of Entry to the City to No.95 Wing of the Royal Australian Air Force on Saturday 12 April 2014.

The Air Force Ceremonial Parade will be an impressive sight, with around 150 military members dressed in ceremonial attire and displaying operational medals and military colours; carrying ceremonial swords and rifles; battle honours being flown; and a band supporting.

Redlanders are invited to line the parade route on Middle Street, Cleveland (between Waterloo and Wynyard streets) to watch this historic event and give the Air Force a warm Redlands welcome.

‘Freedom of Entry to the City’ dates back to the Middle Ages when cities were fortified by walls to protect residents from invaders – right of entry to outside armed forces was a privilege rarely granted but came as a sign of respect for the protection and friendship offered.

Please note: there will be changed traffic conditions including temporary road closures along Middle and Bloomfield Streets, Cleveland, during the parade.
