Our history- Island produce pioneers

From edible flowers to other gourmet goods, the Southern Moreton Bay Islands have long been a hotspot for produce in our City…longer than many people realise.

Pictured is the ‘Roo’ fruit boat, which was used to transport produce to the Brisbane markets from Russell, Karragarra, Macleay and Lamb Islands. The photo from the 1930-40’s shows the middle section of the boat’s long stern piled with boxes set for a trip across the bay.

Farmers began to move to the islands in the 1860s. The early cotton and sugar cane crops were not very successful, so they turned their focus to growing fruit and vegetables. Some farmers even swam cattle across to the islands and tried to set up herds.

One of the early fruit crops was mangoes and some of the trees planted in the 1890s are still growing.
