Local history – Bay days gone by

Pictured is a diving platform off the old South Street jetty and swimming enclosure at Thornlands

As this 1966 photograph shows, people of Redlands have always loved the bay and enjoyed its waters.  What might not be so obvious is where this was taken- can you pick it?

The South Street Jetty was built in 1921, and quickly became a community hub and popular weekend location. Many Thornlands State School students learned to swim at the spot until its closure in 1974 following vandalism.

Fifty years on from this photograph, our love affair with Moreton Bay continues.
