This morning it was reported that a fig tree in Empire Vista Park, Ormiston had a large structural failure.

Further investigations found the tree had signs of white rot, a wood-decaying fungus, in the internal trunk column. The fungal intrusion along with the recent weather conditions, strong winds, contributed to the failure of the tree.

Due to public safety concerns, council officers have made the difficult decision to remove the tree as the remaining canopy is highly likely to fail.

Clean up work is currently being undertaken and complete removal of the tree will take place in the coming weeks when the conditions are safer.

Council looks forward to working with local community members to replant another suitable species of tree in the coming weeks.
