Redland City Council is supporting three Community Garden open days as part of Neighbour Day activities on Redlands Coast.

Neighbour Day, on Sunday 26 March 2023, is Relationships Australia’s annual day of action to increase social connection.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said this year’s theme was Create Belonging and she invited residents to connect with their neighbours to strengthen the spirit of community in their own neighbourhoods.

“Neighbour Day has been connecting communities for over 20 years and Redland City Council is very happy to support this national day of action,” Cr Williams said.

“The feeling of being seen and supported in your own community can have so many positive impacts.

“Any activity or action that connects people, no matter how small, can help foster a sense of belonging and inclusion.

“Research shows that in tough times, such as during floods or storms, neighbours are often the first to help during an emergency situation.

“Good neighbours help us feel safer and happier, and that’s a good reason to create belonging in your corner of the world.”

Everyone is welcome to attend the three free Community Garden open days, which are supported by Council:

  • Karragarra Community Garden will be hosting a morning tea on Saturday 25 March between 10am and 1pm. Visitors can take a tour of the gardens and every person attending will take a free native plant home.
  • Lamb Island Community Garden will be hosting a curry evening, using produce from the garden. The community bus will transport people who need assistance getting to the open day, which will be on Sunday 26 March between 4.30pm and 6.30pm. Email [email protected] to arrange a bus pick up and drop off.
  • Oaklands Street Community Garden in Alexandra Hills will be open to the public between 1pm and 5pm on Sunday 26 March, offering tea, coffee and cold drinks along with plants and bric-a-brac for sale.
