Redlands Coast school communities have until Monday 10 October to nominate their favourite “chappy” for the third annual Pastor Glen Gray Award, which recognises an outstanding local school chaplain.
The award is part of the annual Redland City Mayoral Prayer Breakfast, with the 20th anniversary event to be held on Tuesday 25 October 2022.
Mayor Karen Williams said the award served to highlight the invaluable work of the chaplains who each year offered their support to about 15,000 local students.
“We especially urge students to nominate their chappy and put a smile on their faces,” Cr Williams said.
“Our chappies don’t seek recognition for the incredible emotional and spiritual support they provide to students, families and school staff but they are always there when someone needs to reach out to them.
“This award is a small way we can recognise a special chaplain for what they do to support the wellbeing of young Redlanders.
“So, if you haven’t already, please get your nominations in by the close of business on Monday 10 October and help make your chappy’s day, with the winner announced at the breakfast.”
Previous recipients include Grant Lea for his work supporting students at Dunwich State School and The Sycamore School in 2020, and Terry Keen for his inspirational and selfless work in his role as chaplain at Alexandra Hills State School in 2021.
Last year’s Redland City Mayoral Prayer Breakfast raised close to $30,000, which was shared between 21 state school chaplaincies on Redlands Coast.
This year’s breakfast will include live entertainment, guest speaker Bill Hunter, former chaplain to the Brisbane Broncos NRL team, and special guest Alberto Campbell-Staines, a Paralympian and elite athlete who has represented both Australia and Jamaica.
