If stung, Surf Life Saving Queensland advises to call 000 immediately, provide CPR if required and pour vinegar all over the stung area.

There have been no reports to Council of the deadly irukandji, found in more northern waters.

Serious allergic reactions can occur from marine stingers.

Swimmers were stung at Wellington Point Recreation Reserve on the afternoon of New Year’s Eve. Two people were taken to hospital.

Council had not been notified of stingers at Wellington Point until after the incident and moved quickly to install signage.
