A new app to improve children’s literacy that took its inspiration from Redland City library programs was launched at the Cleveland Library today.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams was joined by Minister for Education, Training and Employment John-Paul Langbroek to launch the SPEAK App at the very place it began as a conversation with Redland library staff.

“This new app encourages oral language and literacy in children and has taken its inspiration from the Speaking Promotes Education and Knowledge (SPEAK) program that has helped promote early literacy in the Redlands since 2011,” Cr Williams said.

“The app uses a variety of activities such as games, nursery rhymes and images to engage with children, helping to improve literacy through fun and entertainment.

“We can all be proud that the SPEAK Community Program that provided the inspiration for this app was founded in Redland City.

“This app will be a fabulous addition to existing initiatives available through the SPEAK program and helps extend the reach of the program beyond the Redlands, making it an accessible resource for anyone wanting help with early childhood literacy.

“The SPEAK app has been funded by Department of Education, Training and Employment South East region, with input from a number of people including Redlands library staff and the Cleveland State School.

“It is a great example of what can be achieved when people who share a common passion for student literacy work together.”

The SPEAK app is available for free through Google Play and the App Store.
