A social gathering will combine with social media in a new form of tourism marketing with the Redlands to host an ‘Instameet’ at Wellington Point on 4 October as part of the Queensland Holiday initiative ‘Biggest Instameet in the world’ being held across Queensland.

An Instameet is a group of Instagrammers or photographers meeting at a pre-determined place and time to socialise while taking photos that are then shared with the group and other social media users through Instagram.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said social media had changed the way people shared stories of great tourism locations.

“Social media has really been a game-changer and Council has embraced the benefits it brings for the community with open arms,” she said.

“It has changed not only the way we communicate with residents, but has added a whole new marketing dimension that helps us share the Redlands with people across the world and this Instameet is a perfect example of this.

“This is a great opportunity to highlight what Redlanders already know – that the Redlands is the best place to live, work and to play.”

The Wellington Point event will coincide with other Instameets being held across the state and will feature 20-year-old Instragram influencer Alex Korica @alexkorica who will provide participants with some of the tips that have helped him generate a following of more than 12,000 on Instragram.

Alex recently posted on Instagram of his excitement to be taking part in the Wellington Point event saying that the location is known for its sunsets and he was hoping for a huge crowd.

Wellington Point Divisional Councillor Wendy Boglary said the Wellington Point pier had become a frequently photographed Redlands tourist location.

“Wellington Point offers plenty for photographers and it is great that its beauty will be seen by thousands across the world through this Instameet,” she said.

“Alex is right in that the location is predominantly known for its great sunsets, but the pier and proximity of nearby islands adds other dimensions to the location that are sure to mean some great shots will be captured.

“This is a great opportunity to meet people and help promote the Redlands, so everyone should grab their phone or camera and get down there on the day and don’t forget to hashtag #thisisqueensland and #redlandsanyday.”

What is an Instameet? An Instameet is a pre-determined place and time where a group of Instagrammers or photographers get together for about an hour or so to meet each other and take photos. Then they upload the photos to Instagram to share with each other and the world. Usually there’s a hashtag to group all the photos together in one gallery and for the Queensland Instameet the hashtag to remember is #thisisqueensland.
