New dog off-leash spot for Amity and Raby Bay

Redland City Council is seeking community input on a proposed new dog off-leash area for Amity Point on North Stradbroke Island.

Division two Councillor Craig Ogilvie said residents could have their say from Monday 3 March to Friday 28 March on two possible locations and whether the area should be fenced.

“The new off-leash area responds to community feedback following the closure of the Flinders Beach dog off-leash area in December 2011 when the State Government declared the Minjerribah Recreation Area (which includes Flinders Beach),” Cr Ogilvie said.

“As a result Council had to close Flinders Beach dog-off leash area and has since been working with key stakeholders to identify possible new dog off-leash locations outside the Minjerribah Recreation Area.”

Comments or suggestions regarding the location and fencing of the proposed dog off-leash area can be received by:

• completing the online survey at ww.redland.qld.gov.au/DogOffLeashAreas

Council’s animal management spokesperson Cr Wendy Boglary said Council had also recently extended the Raby Bay dog off leash area.

“Last year Council ran a three-month trial extension to the Dog off-leash beach area at Raby Bay. This was in response to resident feedback that the beach area was underwater at high tide so not accessible,” she said.

“After considering public feedback, Council has amended the dog off leash area slightly to include the parkland between the beach and closest pedestrian pathway, but stopping the dog off leash area at the pathway.

“This area has been chosen to ensure pedestrian safety by providing a pathway outside the dog off leash area.

“Dog owners must still keep their dogs under control including keeping them on a leash outside the off-leash area and not allowing them to run free from the roadside.”
