A free e-waste collection point will be available at Redland Bay Waste Transfer Station from Tuesday 4 June 2013, with a Birkdale Waste Transfer Station e-waste collection point to follow by the end of June.
On 28 May analogue free-to-air TV signals in the Redlands were switched off and replaced with digital-only signals.
Mayor Karen Williams said residents could give their old TVs a new life by buying a set top box.
“But if you are planning to dispose of your old TV, there’s good news,” Cr Williams said.
“Redland City Council has set up a collection area at Redland Bay Waste Transfer Station to accept old TV’s and other electrical equipment.
“We are also hoping to have a second e-waste collection site at Birkdale Waste Transfer Station operational by the end of June.”
Redland City spokesperson for the environment Cr Paul Gleeson said it was important for residents to recycle their e-waste rather than disposing of it as general waste.
“The switchover will generate a lot of e-waste, which we would like to recycle. If you dispose of these items as general waste they will unnecessarily end up in landfill,” Cr Gleeson said.
“These items can’t go in the normal kerbside recycling bin, so I encourage residents to use the new e-waste drop-off point at Redland Bay or hold on to their e-waste a little longer until the Birkdale collection point is up and running.”
“Council already has cardboard and polystyrene recycling collections at our Birkdale and Redland Bay waste transfer stations. Use this service to get rid of your new television packaging now – free of charge – just remember to keep them separate”, Cr Gleeson said.
What e-waste can you recycle at the Redland Bay drop-off point now?
