More recycling options for Straddie

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams invites businesses on North Stradbroke Island to embrace recycling with a new bulk bin service on offer.

Councillor Williams urged businesses to sign up before the end of the year and save $60.

“The new fortnightly pick-up service is being offered to North Stradbroke Island businesses for the first time and is available as a 1.5 or 3 cubic metre bin,” she said.

“To help bring great recycling habits from home to work, the new recycling bins are an affordable way to recycle many different items including plastic, aluminium, cardboard, glass, steel and paper.”

“The service is available for a minimum two-year period and the $60 establishment fee is being waived for businesses that register with Council by 31 December 2012.

“For the service to proceed, a minimum of 10 commercial contracts are required.”

Redlands households and businesses send almost 59,191 tonnes of waste to landfill each year.

“This is the equivalent of filling almost 42 Olympic swimming pools every year.

“Redlanders are great recyclers at home with around 25 per cent being diverted from landfill each year. We want Straddie businesses to be able to get in on the act,” she said.

“Workplace recycling is often overlooked and is a great area for improvement.”

“It is estimated that nationally approximately 33 per cent of waste sent to landfill comes from the commercial and industrial sector.”
